What is the SSL certificate (HTTPS)

Getting started with SSL (https :)

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. Is a standard / protocol security and was developed by Netscape in 1994. Its use is easily identifiable thanks to a small padlock (graphically) that appears in the browser.

SSL certificates or security certificates are cryptographic protocols that are designed to secure the exchange of information on the Internet. Eg bank card info, passwords and generally any information that is intended to remain private. SSL certificates can also be used for secure mail (email).

Not only e-commerce sites or sites with high-traffic and high-value information need an SSL certificate. Any site, regardless of subject or services promoted, or the traffic big or small, enjoy a big security upgrade to install an SSL certificate.

Web addresses secured with SSL begin with https rather than http :; therefore, some people use the term "https" for SSL.

How it's work

The SSL certificate encrypts the information so they can not be decrypted only by the server to which it is addressed. This ensures that information sent by a website will not be stolen or modified.

Advantages of SSL

SSL provides greater privacy and security than an unencrypted web connection. This technology reduces the risk that the information be intercepted and misused by a third party. Many visitors to websites have more confidence to share personal information when they know they're using an SSL connection.

Its biggest advantage is that passwords protect against interception, when typed in a protected SSL login page.

Another important advantage according to Google, is that sites that have an SSL certificate installed, have a higher ranking on Google search engine.

Checking websites use SSL

Most web browsers show a lock-shaped icon when an SSL connection is established.

The easiest way to check for SSL existance, is to enter the web address into your browser with https: // at the beginning, as follows: https://domain.com. If a padlock icon appears in the browser, click it for additional information and to confirm the safety connection.

If there isn't a padlock icon, then the page is not secured with SSL. Sometimes he may see a cutted lock or a padlock with an exclamation mark, then your page contains or links to http and should be modified according to article here.
